![]() A year together, December 2007 |
December 23 was our one year anniversary of our meeting, which we celebrated by taking a felucca ride on the Nile river at sunset. We have spent the past year coming together in different parts of the world. I don't think I have ever been in so many different places in such a short time and I have traveled much and lived in many different countries in my life. I am impressed that Paul has led this kind of life for the past 5 years. I am beginning to get a bit worn down, aching to experience the earth under my feet and having a place to call home, at least for a while. |

Christmas in Cairo |
||
| Christmas in Cairo is a mixture of things. There seems to be an attempt to create a sense of the Western concept of Christmas which is very much so influenced by commercialism. It is hard to imagine Santa Claus being part of the culture here, but Ahmed, our hotel manager, dressed up as Santa Claus and handed out presents for everybody at the hotel on Christmas Eve. But in general, the Cairo life goes on as usual late into the night. If you want to escape the expectations of Christmas, Cairo is a great place to hang out. | The highlight of our relaxing Christmas break was going to the Cairo Opera House where we saw the Russian Ballet Company perform the Nutcracker. We had a tailor make Paul a suit as his Christmas present, which he picked up on the day of our big night out. It was interesting to experience how Egyptians go out, dress up, eager to have "a cultural experience" or rather socialize in a civilized way. In some ways, it was a bit surreal to be watching Russians perform on a stage in the midst of a city like Cairo with its dirt and chaos, with its desert dust, its Arabic prayers and ancient history. | |

Somehow to me the Middle East represents mystique and the mystics and although the story of the Nutcracker does include magical elements it still seemed out of place. There was one part of the show though that was quite amazing and fitting, in which the music had Arabic themes and the dancers were dressed as belly dancers. It is the first time I have seen classical ballet dancers dance barefoot! The combination of the music and the non-traditional dance steps was right on. I enjoyed that tremendously. | |
